Career change for job security

I’m considering a big change from the path that I was on career-wise. Totally different field, different hours & different wages. If I make the choice to go ahead, that would mean enrolling into college once again and at this point, I’m 26. It’s kinda scary. But, I’d love to start my new career by age 30. Without a doubt, I know a few things:

  • that my tuition, books, etc. would be 100% paid for by the government
  • that employment in this field would be guaranteed as soon as I graduate
  • that after a few years of mandatory work to repay the govt, I’d be free to work anywhere I want to in the world.
  • that despite stricter immigration rules/point-systems worldwide, both work visas & permanent visas are typically given to this field-type because the person would be considered a ‘skilled worker’ and essential to any country.
  • that health, dental & retirement benefits are guaranteed
  • that the global economic crisis is hitting countries hard & unemployment is high in most countries but this field will always be a necessity to humanity. I’ll never have to worry about being ‘let go’ & out of work.
  • that I have a heart for people
  • that I have a heart for science

I’m seriously weighing all the pros & cons of this new possible path & praying over my upcoming decision. All I know is that right now, I’m unhappy with where I work & what I do. Let’s not confuse unhappiness with ungratefulness. I am extremely grateful to be employed at a time when so many people are out of work and struggling. I make an okay amount of money (enough to save, pay some bills & travel), have good vacation time but I feel like my brain is rotting. I was not meant to have a mundane desk job. It leaves me feeling underwhelmed, unfulfilled and unhappy. I want more from life, even if that means flipping the script completely. Presently asking God to direct my path. <3
